7 Foods Your Dog Will Get Sick From

As much as we love to treat our dogs like family, not all human foods are safe for them. Some ingredients that are harmless to us can cause serious health issues in dogs. Here are seven foods your dog should never eat.

1. Chocolate

Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, seizures or death.

2. Grapes and Raisins

These seemingly innocent fruits can lead to kidney failure in dogs. Symptoms may include lethargy, vomiting, and a decrease in appetite.

3. Onions and Garlic

Both fresh and powdered forms can damage a dog’s red blood cells, potentially leading to anemia. Signs of toxicity include weakness and dark-colored urine.

4. Avocados

Avocados contain a toxin called persin. While some dogs might handle small quantities, ingestion can still cause stomach upset or, in larger amounts, more serious reactions.

5. Xylitol

This sugar substitute is found in gum, baked goods, and some peanut butters. It causes a rapid insulin release in dogs, leading to hypoglycemia, seizures, or liver failure.

6. Alcohol

Even a small amount of alcohol can be dangerous for dogs. It depresses the central nervous system and can result in vomiting, breathing difficulties, or coma.

7. Cooked Bones

Cooked bones may splinter and cause choking or internal injury. They can also lead to blockages that may require emergency surgery.

If your dog consumes any of these foods, contact your vet immediately. Keeping harmful foods out of reach and sticking to dog-safe treats is the best way to keep your furry companion healthy and happy.
