The first step is to install the drip edge. A common mistake people make is to nail the drip edge even with the roof. However, you want it to overhang by approximately half an inch. This allows the water to flow off the drip edge without running down the siding. This will help the siding last significantly longer without sustaining water damage.
When working with shingles, there is a good chance that they will not line up with your roof perfectly. You may be tempted to leave the shingles as they are. However, you will want to cut them so that they line up with the roof. They should not be overhanging at all. That is what the drip edge is for.
